I remember when I was a kid, my memory says that I was 5 maybe 6 years of age, my dad took me down along the original The Cut Highway to watch the company building the new section put in this massive steel culvert. Those reading this right about now, some are going, whats the cut? where is this?, some are saying oh yeah I remember that.
The Cut, is the part of Marine Avenue between Willingdon Beach and Brooks School, but what most people do not know is that when the reach the top of the incinerator hill travelling north, and just as you turn onto the straigh-a-way, your on a new section of the highway, the original road travels off about 150 feet and comes back down just where the red Catalyst sign is before you turn to see Brooks School.
The original Cut, is still well travelled these days I see, foot and motorcycle, bike traffic. 18 years ago I walked it, and I could still see the white line, the pavement, so today, March 24 2012, I went to see if I could find that white line. What I found wasnt the white line, but under the surface of 18 years of tree droppings was pavement that has turned back to its original state pretty much, the pavement now is nicely packed rock and sits under 5 inches of tree droppings. If those travelling on that Old Cut stop, it would certainly not take long for Mother Nature to take it back.
