The Inland Lake Thorton Bay, Powell Lake Rail line Connector

On August 2 2009, myself and Pat Haist walked the railline from Loon Lake – Inland Lake down to Thorton Bay on Powell Lake. The previous post here and this post intertwine itself as the rails you see in this post are from the same railline, however the story that comes from this is different. Thorton Bay is the destination site that is being eyed up for development to create a Childrens Camp, this in itself is a good idea, and I do support it with some misgivings as well. Thorton Bay has been used for years previously from Army, Sea and Air Cadets as a form of training grounds, being taken away from them and given to the Canoe Route as a stopping destination does mean many people have travelled here.

Although this being the case, many things of historical value remains here, some small and some large and should this area be developed it is a hope that these historical items will be taken care of, catalogued, and retrieved as a important part of the history of Powell River itself. What is not well known is that logs from the Loon Lake – Inland Lake area was transferred overland by rail car, remains of one shown in the picture below, and cables ran from one end to the other, it is more than likely, as Pat Haist has suggested to myself that two cars were used, with the Donkey being in the middle, as one car was lowered fully loaded with logs, the other was brought up by the weight of the first. A Broken cable is a bad thing and the old wrecked Skeleton Car in the water in Thorton Bay, and the long discarded cable in Loon Lake – Inland Lake is more than likely the results of that.

Thorton Bay more than likely holds many hidden treasures yet to be located, without trouble we located an old waterline, a set of rails, old wooden rails, a skeleton car, some other smaller pieces such as the remains of the file on the beach itself.

Enjoy the pictures for what they are, history returned to some degree and if you know more about this area, please leave a post of your own.
